Securing a motorhome with lashing points

Cargo securing with lashing troughs, lashing eyes and lashing points

If you want to travel by motorhome, there are a few things you need to consider. Correct cargo securing is also important here. However, as many motorhomes usually have too few lashing points, extra lashing points should be retrofitted. After all, lashing prevents the load from slipping and falling and also increases the vehicle’s road safety.

A motorhome offers enough space for numerous utensils, but few are aware of the dangers of unsecured loads. Inadequate securing of the motorhome, for example by failing to use enough lashing points, is not only dangerous, but can also have consequences under criminal law in the event of damage or during traffic controls. According to German Road Traffic Regulations section 22 and other rules and regulations, proper cargo securing is mandatory by law.

Lashing points are fastening parts on the vehicle and are used to anchor lashing equipment. Lashing eyes allow you to create safe and stable points for individual securing on the motorhome. Lashing points can easily be retrofitted and offer more safety.

Lashing eyes can be securely mounted on various surfaces. Depending on the type of load, the eyes can either be firmly welded to the sheet metal or simply screwed on. When they are screwed on, however, the tensile force of the screw connection must be taken into account. Only then can loads be transported safely even if they are heavy.

Before the motorhome can go exploring, it must be properly loaded. To do this, you should first divide the luggage into three categories. A distinction is made here between heavy, medium and light loads. It is important to stow heavy loads such as tins of food, tools, spare parts and liquids as low as possible. The lower the vehicle’s centre of gravity, the more stable it is on the road. Use lashing points for securing the cargo. Also, the load should be evenly distributed around the axles. Medium-weight luggage such as pots and pans can easily be stowed a little higher. Wall cabinets are ideal for light loads.

  • Do not fill the water tank completely – this saves weight.
  • Use aluminium gas cylinders instead of steel cylinders – they are half as heavy.
  • Pay attention to axle load – an even distribution of weight ensures driving stability.
  • Take bagged meals instead of canned food.
  • Plates made of shatterproof melamine and pots and pans made of lightweight aluminium save a few kilos.

Safety and stability are the most important points when securing cargo. Sufficient lashing points are therefore particularly important for securing the motorhome. In our online shop we offer various lashing eyes and lashing points for motorhomes. Take a look around at your leisure and discover what we have to offer. If you have any questions, we will of course be happy to help and advise you.
