Lifting technology for the container sector

Transporting with lifting straps and round slings

You usually see containers standing on the ground or on a truck, ship or train. But how they get there is usually not obvious. Containers are large boxes that weigh tonnes and are used for the storage and/or transport of goods of all kinds. And they naturally have to be lifted and moved. For this to be done safely, the tools provided must be robust and safe.

Lifting straps are strong, robust, load-bearing tapes made of special synthetic fibres, such as polypropylene, polyamide or polyester. These microfilament yarns are extremely resistant and lift loads weighing tonnes gently and safely. In addition, they can be stowed anywhere in the truck to save space and are therefore quickly at hand when you need them. For loading work, it is particularly important that the lifting straps are abrasion-resistant and do not conduct electricity. The surface is protected by a protective layer of polyurethane.

Lifting straps are attached to the goods to be transported, which are then loaded. Lifting straps provide a firm hold and are also part of cargo securing. They secure the goods against slipping.

Lifting straps ensure safe transport and movement. Since the safety of vehicles, cargo and people is at stake here, the law specifies exactly how what is to be secured, where and by whom. VDI 2700 "Securing cargo on road vehicles" is the main set of rules for this.

The colour of a lifting strap indicates its maximum load capacity. Pink represents 500 kg, red 5,000 kg and blue 8,000 kg, and orange indicates any load over 10,000 kg. When buying, it is important to pay attention to the WLL (working load limit) specification. This weight must never be exceeded.

If there are yarn breaks of more than 10 per cent, the lifting straps must be replaced immediately, as safety is no longer guaranteed. The lifting straps should be stored in a dry and clean place. This improves the longevity.

The securing always depends on the type of load as well as its composition.
